Online interviews were not invented in the time of Covid but have been the norm for long distance applicants for many years. The only difference now is that online interviews are becoming the norm for ALL job interviews. Read our Six Tips For A Successful Online Job Interview.
The world has changed and with that comes the way in which we interact with one another – business meetings, sales pitches and job interviews. Making a first impression is not only about what you are wearing and how impressive your CV is, but now also includes effective lighting and your ability to navigate Zoom. Elements such as the speed of your Wi-Fi connection, the availability of technology and the position of the camera all need to be taken into account and practiced before the interview.
“The way in which humans socialise has changed dramatically over a short period of time, and without warning. We have had to adapt to these changes to stay relevant and succeed in this new world. An online job interview, for both the candidate and the interviewer, can be a new experience, but once mastered, can result in enormous benefits,” explains Bongani Magudulela, Director at Search Partners International.
Candidates have always needed to prepare for interviews, and the same still applies for the online interviewing process, with a few additions. Below are our Six Tips For A Successful Online Job Interview:
- Practice makes perfect. Two categories fall under this tip. Firstly, practice your answers to the questions you think you may be asked. Think of witty anecdotes that could be relevant, and practice ways in which to get your answer across while highlighting your positives. Make a cheat sheet that you can glance at during the interview. Secondly, practice using the online platform that the interviewer has suggested, ensuring that there is no awkward fumbling when you are asked to share your screen, mute yourself, access the camera etc. Ask a friend to conduct a dry run with you; asking you questions about your work experience, while having you use elements of the online platform.
- Test your technology. Before the interview find out if you will need to download any software to run the interviewing program. Ensure that your camera and speakers are working, or if you are using ear buds, that they are compatible with your laptop or tablet and are in good condition.
- First impressions still count. Even though you will be having this interview in the comfort of your home, you will still need to dress accordingly. Choose a business outfit suited for the interview, and also look for a quiet, neat place in your home where you can sit. A neutral background works best; you want your interviewer to be looking at you, not the painting behind you. Also, lighting is very important. Choose a location where it is not so dark that it look as though you are sitting in the corner, or too bright that the light is reflecting off your glasses.
- Avoid distractions. If anyone else should be in your home during your interview, make sure to inform them of the time of the interview, and ask them not to bother you and to be quiet. Keep all pets and children out of the room.
- Do not slouch. A simple trick to looking professional is to choose a smaller chair. A large chair or couch will have you slouching, which will make you look untidy. A smaller chair will allow you to sit up straight and look the part.
- Look into the camera. Although it may seem unnatural to begin with, try not to look at the small interviewer screen in the corner, but into the camera.
These few simply tips can help with preparing for an online interview, and also calm your nerves beforehand. “Being ready for anything creates confidence. Having everything in place before your interview gives you the opportunity to perform at your best, and mitigate any possibilities of something going wrong,” says Magudulela.
